Cuba's 1970s bridge between folkloric tradition and modern fusion

Songo is the modern Cuban groove — invented in the early 1970s by José Luis "Changuito" Quintana, the legendary timbale player of Los Van Van, and developed alongside bandleader Juan Formell. Songo is what happens when traditional Afro-Cuban percussion (clave, tumbao, conga, timbale) meets American funk and jazz fusion. It's the rhythm that lets a Cuban kit drummer sit in with a contemporary band without leaving the tradition behind.

Songo has a 16th-note feel in the right hand (closer to funk than to mambo's 8th-note bell), a cross-stick or snare backbeat on 2 and 4, and a syncopated kick that often anticipates the bass line — landing on the &-of-4 of the previous bar to push into beat 1 of the next.

For an intermediate-or-better drummer who came up on rock and funk, songo is the easiest entry into authentic Cuban kit drumming. The hand pattern looks like a funk groove. The cross-stick acts like a backbeat. The kick is syncopated like a 16th-note funk kick. Only the where of the kick changes — it has to lock to clave, not to a 1-and-3 rock template. Once you can play songo, the rest of the Latin track makes immediate sense.

We'll work through five variations: (1) the basic songo, (2) Joel Rosenblatt's hi-hat sweep variation (a güiro effect), (3) songo with bell-of-ride instead of hat (the "loud" songo for choruses), (4) the funkier songo with a snare backbeat instead of cross-stick, and (5) songo with a bass-anticipating kick on the &-of-4 (the most idiomatic Cuban version).

1 — Basic Songo (Hat 16ths + Cross-Stick + Syncopated Kick)

Play the snare line on beats 2 and 4 as cross-stick, not full snare — that's the songo norm. Right hand: 16ths on closed hi-hat. Kick: &-of-2 (bombo) and 4, same as mambo. This is the entry-level songo. It already sounds Cuban, but feels familiar from funk because of the 16th-note hand. Lock the kick precisely on the &-of-2; if it drifts to the &-of-3, the groove inverts.
2 — Hi-Hat Sweep Variation (Joel Rosenblatt)

Joel Rosenblatt's contribution: alternate closed and open hi-hat on every other 16th, creating a güiro-like sweeping wash. The open-hat circles in the notation are your second 16th of every pair — open the hat with your foot just enough to let the cymbals tssss. The cross-stick on 2 and 4 still anchors. Don't get loud: the open hat should be a shimmer, not a crash.
3 — Songo with Bell Ride (Loud Songo)

Move the right hand from the closed hat to the bell of the ride; switch from 16ths to a syncopated 8th-note bell pattern (essentially the mambo bell figure). Cross-stick still on 2 and 4. This is the chorus sound — louder, more open, used when the band lifts. The kick figure does not change — only the right-hand voice.
4 — Funky Songo (Snare Backbeat Instead of Cross-Stick)

Backbeat is now a full-volume snare hit on 2 and 4 (no cross-stick), plus an additional ghosted/popped snare on the &-of-3. This is the funk-fusion songo — the one that crosses over into Yellowjackets/Weather Report territory. The 2 and 4 should crack; the &-of-3 should be a softer accent that pushes into beat 4.
5 — Songo with Bass-Anticipating Kick

Bombo on the &-of-2, kick on 4, plus a third kick on the &-of-4 — that last one is the anticipation. In Cuban music, the bass player often anticipates the next chord on the &-of-4 of the previous bar; the kick mirrors it. When this loops, the &-of-4 of bar one and beat 1 of bar two stack into a tight kick-into-downbeat phrase. This is the most idiomatic Cuban kit kick — once it locks, you're playing songo, not funk-with-Latin-decoration.
