Prerequisites

Bembé is a 6/8 folkloric rhythm with deep Yoruba ceremonial roots — used in Cuba for celebrations and rituals tied to specific orishas (deities). It's older than the kit drumming we usually study; on the kit we're representing an ensemble of bell, shekere, and conga voices through three or four limbs. The bell pattern at the heart of bembé is a close cousin of the standard 6/8 pattern from the previous lesson, with subtle variations in stroke placement and accent.

The shekere — a beaded gourd shaken in a swooping figure — provides the secondary rhythmic layer: a steady, breath-like accompaniment that underpins the bell. On the kit we translate it to closed hi-hat playing every 8th note, with subtle accents marking the dotted-quarter pulse. Add the clave foot and a sparse kick and you have a full bembé feel: the bell as the centre, the shekere as the pulse-keeper, the foot as the ground.

1 — The Bembé Bell Pattern Alone

Bembé bell — denser than the standard 6/8 pattern, with strokes filling more of the bar. Accent the dotted-quarter beats (positions 1 and 4 of each bar) to keep the main pulse audible. Strike the cowbell with the shoulder of the stick for the loud notes, the tip for the quieter ones — even on one cowbell you can shape a phrase.
2 — Add Shekere on Closed Hi-Hat

Closed hi-hat plays every 8th — that's the shekere voice, a continuous shaker-like wash. Bell pattern sits on top as accents. In a real bembé the shekere swoops up and down with breath shapes; on the hi-hat you approximate that by accenting the main beats and softening the offbeats. Two hands, two voices, one bell-like instrument.
3 — Add Clave-Foot on Dotted Quarter

Hi-hat foot on every dotted quarter — four stomps per two-bar phrase, anchoring the main pulse. The two hand voices and one foot voice now form a three-layer texture. The challenge: keep the foot completely steady while the bell's busy 8ths above it are syncopating against it. The foot is the metronome; the hands are the music.
4 — Full Bembé with Kick

Full bembé: bell pattern + shekere on closed hi-hat + alternating kick (beat 1) and hi-hat foot (beat 2). All four limbs are now active. Volume from loudest to quietest: bell, shekere, kick, hi-hat foot. If anything collapses, it's usually the bell that loses its shape under the pressure of coordinating the feet — slow down, get the bell rock-solid, then add the rest.
